Let Our Children Speak: a poem

Let our children speak. Give them a voice. They didn’t make the world what it is. They inherited it and now have to live in the mess we made – day in and day out.
Let our children mourn. Give them space to cry and to hurt and to talk about what they feel. Allow them the gift of your silence. Be quiet and listen.
Let our children act. Give them the time to put action behind their glorious youthful hope; something most adults have long lost. They are the future; let them grow strong in their will to right the world’s wrongs.
Let our children dream. It is the dreams of childhood that produce the beauty and innovations of tomorrow. And, it is those same dreams that revive our spirits, inspire our communities, and nurture our love.
Let our children speak. They may be willful and disobedient. They may be be naive and innocent. They may be sensitive and idealistic.
But so were you once … long ago.
